The Difference between Bipolar Disorder and Depression

Most of us have had a case of the blues. When it happens, we can usually point to an outside cause: a loss, physical exhaustion, a major life change. Our teen years often bring some depression accompanied by dark poetry writing. Clinical depression comes from internal causes. Because it' s caused by a chemical imbalance, it has to be cured by restoring the proper balance. This is true for both bipolar disorder and depression.

Depression is Depression is Depression

The outward signs of despair are similar in both bipolar disorder and depression. There is evident sadness, uncontrollable crying, inability to feel pleasure or happiness, an excessive need for sleep, lack of energy and interest in usual pastimes, restlessness, lack of concentration, irritability, loss of appetite or binge eating, feeling of low self-esteem and hopelessness, aches and pains or digestive problems without physical cause, and thoughts of death and suicide.

While bipolar disorder and depression seem similar on the surface, they are two different disorders that call for different treatments. It is not unusual for bipolar disorder to be misdiagnosed as major depressive disorder, especially when the patient' s moods swing more in the depressed direction. Frequently, the patient will only mention the depression to the doctor because the manic episodes do not seem like an illness from their point of view, causing misdiagnosis.
Additionally, people with bipolar disorder can be normal for long stretches of time before suffering either mania or depression.
Manic Symptoms

A short or mild manic episode can seem like a good mood or a life of the party kind of personality to a casual observer. It is far more than that, however. It can include an unexplained sense of euphoria, reckless behavior, excess energy, anger, little sleep, racing thoughts, fast talking that is difficult to follow, alcohol or drug abuse. In extreme cases, a person can have delusions, hallucinations and even hear voices. Unlike other kinds of happy moods, mania can be accompanied by anxiety.

Some people with bipolar disorder have said that they cannot remember some of their reckless behaviors after returning to normal. Others find that have indulged in excessive spending. Such unexplained experiences are, naturally, frightening.

While a gloomy mood may be sign of trouble, it is important to consider the differences between bipolar disorder and depression when seeking treatment.
